In its fourth session, the Ministry of Finance organized the "Park Innovation Experience" at Zabeel Park, Dubai, which focused on interactions with people from all walks of life. The event gave children the chance to participate in innovative activities, including games focusing on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, while other members of the public were given the opportunity to explore the latest innovations and digital tools. At the “Pecha Kucha” challenge, teams of university students, young innovators and those interested in the financial sector competed by offering their ideas on financial technology using 20 video slides.
The Ministry of Finance also organized the "World in the Future" event at the Dubai Trade Centre to celebrate innovation and innovators. The "World in the Future" and the "Park Innovation Experience", along with other events and initiatives, together formed part of the UAE's Innovation Month, which aimed to promote innovation and creative thinking among different segments of society.
“World in the Future” included a number of lectures and dialogues with a wide range of guest speakers, including Michio Kaku, author and Professor of Physics at the City College of New York. Kaku reviewed the world in the future, humanity in the next 30 years, the changes that will be imposed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the tremendous evolutionary impact of information technology on the future of humanity.
Another topic, entitled "Global Basic Income – A Possible Solution to a World Oriented Towards Artificial Intelligence", was presented by Daniel Lavigne and Mark Murphy, director of GiveDirectly, Kenya, while "Experiments that Build Successful Entrepreneurs” was presented by Joy Ajlouny, co-founder and marketing manager at Fetchr, Kushal Shah, head of digital solutions for the Middle East and Asia at Roland Berger, Ambareen Moussa, founder and CEO of souqalmal.com, and Hans Henrik Christensen, vice president of Dubai Technology Centre for Entrepreneurship.
The aim of these events was to promote the innovative participation of youth in the financial sector by providing young innovators with the opportunity to present their creative and innovative ideas for technology development, and to contribute to their preparation for the labour market, thus maximizing the role of the youth in promoting sustainable development and strengthening the UAE's status as a global centre for innovation and knowledge.
The Ministry of Finance launched a series of public events on the occasion of Innovation Month in February 2018, which reflected the UAE's strong commitment to innovation and leadership under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Innovation Month kicked off in Abu Dhabi under the slogan "Innovation Starts With You" and continued in the emirates of Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, with the month's events concluding in Dubai from February 22-28.
The programme's main initiatives were included under three headings: the "Innovation Charter", which aimed to introduce the programme's innovation strategy and launch its visual identity, the signing of the “Corporate Innovation Charter” and, lastly, an "Innovation Contest", held through the programme's social media channels.
The Ministry's activities aimed to activate the participation of all segments of society – from children and families to students and specialists in various fields – within a framework that would enhance cooperation and enrich dialogue between innovators, entrepreneurs, students, the youth and thought leaders, as well as various public and private organisations and academic institutions. The highlight of the UAE Innovation Month 2018 was the Finovate event, which featured leading speakers and innovators from around the world who discussed important topics such as innovation and financial technology. Other activities of the Ministry of Finance dealt with innovation-related topics ranging from the future of work and employment to finance and public spaces.
The Ministry of Finance organised an Innovation Festival on 21 and 22 November 2016 in conjunction with UAE Innovation Week. The initiative was a translation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and a reflection of the national innovation strategy launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to contribute to realizing the vision of the UAE 2021.
The Innovation Festival included an agenda of innovative events targeting all segments and levels in different sectors, locally and internationally. It created a platform for people to communicate, share their knowledge, exchange views and experiences, as well as discuss the challenges of unleashing innovative, creative thinking and applying it at ground level.
The festival included a wide range of workshops, including "Young Innovators" for school children aged 8 to 12, at which they learned to design, manufacture and program robots using simple and easy tools. The Ministry also held interactive seminars under the auspices of the e-Dirham system to enhance communication between various parties, in addition to an intensive two-day "Hackathon" programming competition under the slogan "Break Your Way to Smart Cities".
